Head Coach Mark Birtwistle has been at the helm of Eastern Volleyball since 1990.

In his time at Eastern, Birtwistle has accumulated 778 career victories placing him #4 on the all-time winningest active coaches list. With a 778-256 career record (74%), Birtwistle is also among the leaders in NCAA DIII volleyball in winning percentage. He has been named the conference Coach of the Year 10 times and earned AVCA Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 2002, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2016.

Eastern Volleyball has consistently been ranked among the nations Top 25 volleyball teams in NCAA Division III and had a run of 10 consecutive seasons on that list. The program advanced to the National Semifinal match in 2011 and twice to the NCAA National Quarterfinals. Eastern has won 22 conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament 20 times. Eastern has reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen 10 times and enjoyed a 15-year consecutive win streak in NCAA Tournament first-round matches.

Under Birtwistle's leadership, Eastern Volleyball has had 38 All-America selections and is still the only program, at any division, to have two classmates be 4-time All-Americans. Eastern is also one of only three programs in the history of NCAA DIII volleyball to have 3 players (Courtney Reinhold, Maria Horning and Rylie Haas) earn All-America all four years of their careers.

Birtwistle's players have also earned accolades in the classroom producing a team GPA over 3.0 for over a decade. The team has earned the AVCA's Team Academic Award multiple times for having a team GPA over 3.3. Eastern volleyball players have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, Conference Senior Scholar-Athletes and more than 60 individuals have been named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll since 2008. Two different individuals have been named the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year. That award is selected from area colleges and universities at all three levels of NCAA Competition.
